Many of the residents in the hotel were farmworkers. Eventually, she saved enough money to buy her own hotel. Alicia worked as a waitress during the day and as a factory worker at night. By the 1960s, the average life expectancy of a farmworker in California was only 49 years old.ĭolores looked up to her mother, Alicia, who worked tirelessly to care for her family. ![]() On top of this, working conditions were incredibly demanding. Most farm workers were people of color and moved often in search of work. Laborers were hired seasonally and paid very low wages. Large food corporations took over small farms to create massive, industrialized farms. During the Great Depression and World War II, agriculture in California changed dramatically. Living in Stockton allowed young Dolores to witness the farm industry firsthand. She moved with her mother and brothers to the agricultural community of Stockton in California.
